Implant Supported Dentures
As you get older, your teeth loose some their stability which can cause them to fall out, this is when dentures are required. Traditional dentures rest on the gums and can be removed very easily, however, in some cases the lower jaw is not stable enough to support traditional dentures. When this is the case, Dr. Mei in Dearborn, MI could recommend implant supported dentures to give your false teeth more stability.
The Implant Process
The process for implant supported dentures is more extensive than the process for traditional dentures. This is mostly because of the implant process and not the denture manufacturing process. Implants are usually placed in the front of the jaw since the bone is thicker and more durable there. Since it takes a few months for the implant to successfully bond to the jaw bone, a temporary denture is made. Once the implants are set, healing caps are temporarily placed on the top of the implants to ensure the gums grow around the implants correctly, these caps are replaced by permanent abutments that will support the permanent dentures. A metal bar is placed on the abutments and the permanent implant support dentures are put in place and your teeth are all set.
Benefits of Implant Supported Dentures
- Stability | Implant supported dentures are far more stable than traditional dentures that can be easily removed and cleaned. While implant supported dentures can wiggle a little bit when chewing, they will be more secure than traditional dentures.
- Natural Look | It is crucial for your dentures to look like your natural teeth for optimal appearance. Traditional dentures can wiggle around, making them look false, but implant supported dentures have the stability necessary to provide a natural looking smile.
- Oral Health | Traditional dentures can, over time, wear down your gums and other soft tissues in your mouth which can be both uncomfortable and cause oral health issues, like gingivitis and gum disease. This is not the case with implant supported dentures since they do not rest on the gums. Implant supported dentures will also give your jaw bone added support.
